The work pace picks up in second grade and the children will be working on increasing independence through the year.  Please help me emphasize that your child is the one responsible for his or her behavior and work.  Learning these life skills early will prepare them for a successful future.  This means they are in charge of remembering homework, asking for your signatures, etc...  Of course, you can help and remind sometimes, but they are ultimately responsible.  I have found that children are so much more capable than adults give them credit for and it empowers them to know that we recognize their abilities and give them a chance to exercise them.  Behavior is never blamed on someone or something else because every one is responsible for himself.
